CM bandies idea for education in Penang

Monday January 25, 2010

PENANG: Penang should look into injecting a scientific and entrepreneurial component into its education system to retain its edge as the Silicon Valley of Malaysia.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said students should be encouraged to pursue challenging scientific disciplines if the state wanted to remained not only as the Silicon Valley of Malaysia but also the Software Valley of Malaysia.

“It was with this in mind that the Penang Science Council is being formed to encourage more children and adults to be innovative and creative,” he said at the ground-breaking ceremony of the Prince of Wales Island International School in Balik Pulau on Saturday. The RM95mil international school which is developed by MTT & Prio-rity Group of Companies can accommodate 800 students when it is completed in two years.

With the addition of the school, Penang will have a total of seven international schools.

Present at the function was group executive chairman Datuk Dr Kenny Ong.

Lim said the Penang Science Council’s first pro-tem meeting will be held today.

He also said the establishment of the international school indicated the growing importance of providing a quality international school curriculum and placed Penang as another education site of choice for both locals and expatriates here.

“Balik Pulau is also a choice location as an education hub and with the acquisition of over 81ha of land, the state hopes to attract international schools, university branch campuses, hospitality schools and science centres with the aim of driving Penang forward as a hi-tech, creative and innovative knowledge-based economy,” he said.
