Fama to shape up food producers

Micro-enterprises expected to be ready for export market in 5 years

GEORGE TOWN: The Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama) wants to get ready the micro-enterprises involved in the manufacturing of food products for export in five years.

Fama service director Mansor Omar told StarBiz that Fama would provide training for the micro-enterprises in labelling, packaging, and familiarising them with the health regulations of overseas countries.

”Universiti Sains Malaysia’s (USM) school of management studies is also establishing a centre for sustainable leadership with the Human Resource Ministry to train the micro-enterprises to be competitive with professional ethical values.

”This centre, to be located at USM, will be ready by the end of 2010,” he said.

Mansor spoke after the launch of a seminar on the Challenges and Practices of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Malaysia at the USM’s school of management.

Also present was USM school of management dean Assoc-Prof Datuk Ishak Ismail.

About 100 micro-enterprises and SMEs attended the one-day seminar.

Mansor said there were presently some 2,000 micro-enterprises registered with Fama, earning less than RM250,000 a year.

”There are 1,000 SMEs with revenue of less than RM25mil a year registered with Fama.

”This sector is already exporting to overseas. The challenge now is to close the gap between the micro-enterprises and SMEs,” he said.

Meanwhile, Ishak said a challenge was to change the attitude of hypermarkets towards the local micro-enterprises and SMEs.

”Although the hypermarkets provided support for these micro-enterprises and SMEs, the attitude can best be described as lukewarm.

”Goods produced by the local micro-enterprises and SMEs tend to be displayed at non-strategic locations, away from the point-of-sales of the hypermarket.
”On the other hand, the micro-enterprises and SMEs also need to change their mindset towards marketing their products.

”They need to ensure timely delivery and the quality of their products,” he said.
